The Highway Code

Some changes were made to the Highway Code in January 2022, some of which affect cyclists in particular. You should pay attention to the new rules — they should give you more confidence when riding on the road, as they offer ways to make yourself safer, and they ask other road users to be more careful, too. But they also make important points about ways you should respect others as well.

As always, we encourage everyone to use the highways responsibly and considerately, regardless of their chosen means of transport. And the new regulations support this approach by introducing the idea of a hierarchy of road users; the most vulnerable should be given the highest priority, while those with the greatest power must take the greatest responsibility. For example, cyclists must behave respectfully towards pedestrians when using shared routes; and likewise, drivers must be considerate to cyclists on the road.
