Express Park to Docks Route

Express Park to Docks

BACC cycling audit members completed an on site survey around the Express Park Roundabout, the link route to River Parrett path (river bank), slope on to Western Way, loop to Linham Road, continuing on River Parrett path (West Quay side) to the Bridgwater Docks area using Somerset County Council (SCC) provided & detailed drawings (WSP Project Drawing Numbers: 62102424-003 sheets 001, 004, 005 & 006 and main route drawings: 62102424-004 sheets 001 through to 006).

Following this audit, we have created a ‘BACC Invention Report‘ (full report detail is available), where we have recommended seven design change recommendations, which were fundamentally looking at safety and driving towards meeting national LTN 1/20 standards, especially creating an ‘open space approach’ and safe cycling corridors into the heart of our town.

As this scheme develops, we will update this page to keep you informed.

Currently, BACC has carried out a detailed cycle audit survey, put together an Express Park to the Bridgwater Docks (element 3) Report, suggested seven recommendations and actions that are critical, particularly when considering peoples safety.

Recommendations in brief; detailed view and expression of deep concern about the unsafe Express Park junction crossing – several safety design features are required here, removal of a large amount of vegetation around the link path to river bank, reassessment of the starting point for the river path off of Linham Road, demarcation required for cyclists and walkers on the short path leading from the river bank to the Docks area and the significant design concept of building a light weight bridge across the docks inlet basin – major improvement, see Google map & concept photo in gallery below.

This is a cycling and walking improvement in to Bridgwater that has come directly out EDF community funded monies and it will be important with this scheme (as with all schemes) that we apply to the Department of Transport (DfT) standards driven from the ‘Gear Change’ document and spelled out in the Local Transport Note (LTN – 1/20) guidance. It should therefore be noted that the DfT has stated “we will not fund or part-fund any scheme that does not meet these new standards”.
