Introduction

The Bridge and Colley Lane District, covers a wide area, which extends from the Broadway Bridge, the River Parrett to the M5 motorway bridge, along the M5 corridor to the Westonzoyland Road (A372), from this juncture all the way along the A372 to the end of St John’s Street and then links back to the Broadway Bridge.

This district contains areas such as; the Colley Lane industrial estate (fire station), Eastover Park, Cranleigh Gardens area, Bridge Estate, Dunwear Ponds and the Folletts Farm/M5 land corridor.

There is currently one small planning application within this district , namely Somerset Bridge. Part of the Celebration Mile (major town board improvements) is also in this district, however the planning applications are part of a separate page.

Other infrastructure & town developments, which may occur here are the possibilities of introducing River Parrett trail upgrades, Dunwear Lane cycle corridor links, missing link routes across the Colley Lane & Bridge Estates. As always, watch this space!

Somerset Bridge Development

This small 36 house development is currently in ‘outline’ planning application and has major cycle corridors approaching it and also running along side the River Parrett trail. BACC have raised major concerns about this development (see application 37/22/00007) particularly with respect to unsafe access & egress to the site and have inputted planning comments accordingly.

The River Parrett trail runs along side this development and links with the Squibbers Way (good access to cycle routes via the river & canal paths). The A38 entrance to this site, on the Hamp Bridge (see photos), has a significant crossing point on the canal tow path (part of the NCN route 3) which, runs dangerously across the site road entrance.

The main issues associated with BACC planning comments (in brief) are; site access and egress (A38 entrance is narrow with poor visibility, egress cannot be allowed to and from site, design of flow traffic system), Squibbers Way access and links, safe access to houses for both pedestrians & cyclists, extremely poor quality transport technical note and recommendations to re-design the Somerset Bridge road system.
