Wembdon Parish – showing church path route

Wembdon Church Path

BACC cycling audit members completed a site survey of the Wembdon Church path improvements using the Local Transport Note (LTN 1/20) guidance and our combined cycling and walking infrastructure knowledge and experience. It is noted that the report produced from this survey could not have happened without the support, approval and agreement of Wembdon Parish Council (WPC).

Within the ‘Wembdon Church Path Feasibility Study‘, we have laid out seven recommendations/actions. These are all driving towards meeting those new LTN standards and especially creating an ‘open space approach’ to cycling and walking corridors across town.

This is the ‘first’ BACC cycling and walking feasibility study in Bridgwater that has come directly out of detailed discussions with WPC members and the St George’s Church Minister.

As this scheme develops, we will update this page to keep you informed.

Wembdon Church Path is a quiet countryside style short path, whereby the new required tarmac path measures only 0.115 Km from the Crowpill Rhyne bridge to Church Farm houses. The full route goes through the church car park and on to the corner of  Church Road. Although this is a short route, the line of the route is directly on the western approach to the town centre.

BACC are currently concentrating on the north to south route (Puriton to North Petherton) and the west to east (Cannington to Westonzoyland) segregated routes across Bridgwater and the outlying areas. This route is extremely important as it lies directly on the western route from Cannington and links via the crossing on the Homberg Way, through a shared use path to Crowpill Lane, across Chilton Street to Saltlands Avenue and then meets up with part of the north to south route at Linham Road.

A significant path allowing flow and connectivity, linking quiet roads to off-road segregated routes.

This is the first BACC cycling and walking feasibility study in Bridgwater. The report template therefore will be used for other more complex feasibility studies, as we go forward with future corridor improvements. We have applied the Department of Transport (DfT) standards driven from the ‘Gear Change’ document and as spelled out in the LTN 1/20 guidance.

Currently, BACC has carried out a detailed cycle audit survey, created a detailed ‘Wembdon Church Path Feasibility Study‘, suggested seven recommendations and actions, particularly ensuring that land owner approvals are given.

Recommendations in brief; following land owner approval consultation will be carried out with Somerset County Council (SCC), design drawings to be formally produced, path improvement plans to be included within the Bridgwater Local Walking & Cycling Infrastructure Plan (LWCIP) report, all design interventions contained within the feasibility study to be fully considered and included in subsequent drawings, review of the assigned church path Public Right of Way (PRoW) designation and fundamentally that funding required to tarmac to large area of church car park is included (see photo gallery below).
