Bridgwater’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan has just been published by Somerset County Council.
What are LCWIPs? Does the Bridgwater document give you confidence that new infrastructure will be built?
Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) are focused, ten-year plans for developing a cycling and walking network within a local area. They were first mentioned in the Government’s 2017 Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS) which set out the Government’s ambition to make walking and cycling more natural choices for shorter journeys.
The Government’s aim by 2025 is to:
• Double the levels of cycling (from a starting level of 2013);
• Increase walking activity (to 300 stages per person per year); and
• Increase the percentage of children aged 5 to 10 that walk to school from 49% (2014)
to 55%.
The LCWIPs provide a new local approach to identify cycling and walking improvements that will help deliver the Government targets. They also provide an opportunity to improve the local journey experience for everyone, however they choose to travel, by providing greener, healthier and more active streets.
