What is Active Travel
Active travel means getting around in a way that doesn’t use fossil fuels as well as making you physically active. Active travel improves your health and wellbeing, saves you money and helps reduce your carbon footprint.
Active travel usually means short journeys such as walking or cycling to school, to local shops, as a way of commuting to work or even to the train station. Encouraging active travel will bring many benefits to our community by improving our local air quality and increasing road safety.
The benefits of active travel soon add up, did you know that choosing to walk or cycle just once a week instead of driving, will save you 26kg carbon dioxide a year, which is enough to fill 10 balloons. Over a year, you are making a real difference.
Walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 35%, type II diabetes by 40% and depression by 30%.
Cycling can often be faster than driving, with beginners able to cycle 3 miles in 15 minutes – it can take you longer to find your car keys!
Come along to Bridgwater’s first Active Travel Day on Saturday 21st May at Bridgwater Town Hall to find out more about Active Travel as well more information on walking and cycling in the Bridgwater area.
